Cardboard Bale Weight: 2026 Manufacturer Data for 51 Vertical Baler Models

What are the key cardboard bale weight statistics?
Cardboard bale weight does not have one universal number. Among four unqualified current vertical-baler models with exact 60 × 30 × 48-inch dimensions that publish ranges rather than only upper limits, the combined manufacturer-published cardboard/OCC range is 800–1,300 pounds, verified July 29, 2026. The complete release below contains 51 vertical-baler model rows from eight manufacturers and keeps ranges, ceilings, single stated figures, and source conflicts separate.
- Four unqualified fixed 60 × 30 × 48-inch vertical-baler models that publish ranges collectively span 800–1,300 pounds: Bramidan B6030 and X6030 LP at 800–1,200 pounds, Komar VB6030-2300HD at 850–1,000 pounds, and Komar VB6030-3400HD at 1,000–1,300 pounds (Bramidan and Komar Industries; verified July 29, 2026).
- A 60 × 30 × 48-inch bale has a nominal geometric volume of exactly 50 cubic feet, or about 1.85 cubic yards, so the 800–1,300-pound range above normalizes to 16.0–26.0 pounds per cubic foot (calculated from manufacturer-stated dimensions, July 29, 2026).
- The 2026 dataset contains 51 vertical-baler model rows from eight manufacturers: 45 direct, unambiguous primary-source rows and six qualified primary-source rows whose same-page conflicts or material/dimension ambiguities remain visible (Indianapolis Compactor Repair Research dataset version 2026.07.29).
- The clean manufacturer-published ranges extend from 85–130 pounds for Bramidan's B4 cardboard bale to 1,850–2,200 pounds for Komar's VB8448 OCC bale (Bramidan and Komar Industries; verified July 29, 2026).
- Within Komar's own current specifications, a larger bale is not automatically denser: the 60-inch VB6030XD's published ceiling normalizes to 26.0 lb/ft³, while the 84-inch VB8448's 2,200-pound range endpoint normalizes to about 19.6 lb/ft³ (our calculation from Komar dimensions and weights, July 29, 2026).
- EPA's April 2016 memorandum lists flattened OCC at 106 pounds per cubic yard and baled OCC at 700–1,100 pounds per cubic yard; the memorandum identifies source 10 for the baled factor as WasteCare Corporation, so the figures are EPA-published planning factors rather than a federal bale-weighing study (U.S. EPA, April 2016).
- Komar's fixed-height 60- through 84-inch vertical line normalizes to about 450–702 pounds per cubic yard at each row's published upper endpoint or ceiling; only the 26.0-lb/ft³ rows reach the 700-lb/yd³ floor of EPA's sourced baled-OCC band (our calculation from Komar specifications, July 29, 2026).
- In the same 60 × 30 × 48-inch chamber, Komar publishes 850–1,000 pounds at 56,538 pounds of working platen force and 1,000–1,300 pounds at 67,858 pounds (Komar Industries; verified July 29, 2026).
- The 31 ceiling rows cannot be averaged as though they were measured outputs; a ceiling records an upper limit, not a typical produced bale (Indianapolis Compactor Repair Research, July 29, 2026).
- ReMA Item 11 defines OCC as corrugated containers with test liner or kraft liner with a 1% prohibitive limit and 5% combined outthrows-plus-prohibitives limit; Item 11 does not set a required bale weight (ReMA/ISRI Scrap Specifications, effective July 14, 2022).
- EPA's April 2016 baled-OCC factor is published by EPA but attributed in the memorandum to WasteCare Corporation; it is not a federal field-measurement sample (U.S. EPA, Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors, April 2016).
- Fastmarkets reported a U.S. national OCC average of $45 per short ton in January 2026 and $62.50 per ton in May 2026, making a 1,000-pound bale's index-value arithmetic $22.50 and $31.25, respectively (Fastmarkets, January 26 and May 8, 2026).
- AF&PA reports the United States recycled more than 33 million tons of cardboard in 2024, at a 69%–74% recycling rate; the rate is a range because it compares material recycled with material available for recovery under an updated methodology (AF&PA, 2025).
- OSHA's cardboard-baling page records one worker crushed by 1,600 pounds of baled cardboard; the figure is a case fact, not evidence of a typical bale weight (OSHA, Green Job Hazards: Cardboard Baling).
- ReMA paper-stock terms define the U.S. short ton as 2,000 pounds and the metric tonne as 2,204.6 pounds; they also require that buyer and seller establish minimum load weights and any light-load fees before shipment (ReMA/ISRI paper-stock terms, effective July 14, 2022).
- Indiana reported 840,265 tons of commodity-recyclable shipments from municipal solid waste in 2024, including 557,777 tons of paper and cardboard, within a 17.8% statewide recycling rate (Indiana Department of Environmental Management, 2024 Recycling Index Report, issued November 1, 2025).

How much does a cardboard bale weigh?
Published cardboard and OCC figures in the 51-row vertical-baler dataset extend from an 85–130-pound range on Bramidan's B4 to a 1,850–2,200-pound range on Komar's VB8448. The more comparable answer for the common fixed 60 × 30 × 48-inch geometry is 800–1,300 pounds across the four unqualified models that publish actual ranges; other same-size models publish upper limits as high as 1,400 pounds, which are not averages.
Three distinctions control the answer. Machine and bale geometry determine nominal volume; claim type determines whether a number is a range, ceiling, or single stated value; and material basisdetermines whether the figure applies specifically to OCC, to cardboard, or to a mixed material category. A machine's unit weight, shipping weight, press force, and bale weight are separate specifications.

What does cardboard bale weight look like by baler model?
The register contains 51 current vertical-baler model rows from eight manufacturers. Every model links to its manufacturer page or manufacturer PDF, and every row keeps the manufacturer's claim type intact; ★ marks an unambiguous primary-source row, while ● marks a primary-source row with a disclosed conflict or ambiguity.
How to read the claim types
- Range — the manufacturer publishes both a low and a high figure. This is the strongest basis for describing an interval.
- Ceiling — the manufacturer publishes “up to,” “≤,” or equivalent upper-limit wording. A ceiling is not an average, typical output, or guarantee.
- Stated — the manufacturer publishes one figure without a range or upper-limit qualifier.
In the tables, normalized lb/ft³ means published weight divided by nominal volume. A † marks a ceiling and/or a maximum-height calculation; it is a reproducible specification reference, not a measured field density. Bales per 2,000 lb uses the published weight, with ≥ on ceiling rows because a lighter produced bale would require more bales to equal a short ton. Working force labels are preserved as published and are not assumed to be engineering-equivalent across manufacturers.

What do current manufacturers publish for horizontal cardboard-baler weight?
Horizontal machines belong in a separate appendix because closed-door, two-ram, and auto-tie systems do not share one finished-bale convention. Some publish approximate weights, some publish upper limits, and some use variable bale length; merging them into the fixed vertical table would create false comparability. A row is labeled multi-material when the manufacturer names OCC as an accepted material but does not assign the displayed weight specifically to OCC.

What does this data show — and what does it not show?
This register shows what current manufacturers publish for cardboard and OCC bale weight by model, with dimensions and claim wording preserved. It supports model-level comparisons, plausibility checks, size-class references, and transparent arithmetic; it does not turn manufacturer specifications into measurements.
No bale was weighed for this page. This research did not identify a representative field dataset capable of establishing a measured national, Indiana, Indianapolis, or Marion County average, and a ceiling such as “up to 1,100 pounds” cannot be converted into an average without inventing the distribution beneath it. The actual weight of a specific bale comes from a scale measurement.
How was the cardboard bale weight dataset built?
The dataset was assembled from current manufacturer pages and manufacturer PDFs and then normalized into one reproducible register. The method preserves what each source actually claims, discloses conflicts rather than resolving them by preference, and limits headline aggregates to rows whose claim type and source qualification make the comparison valid.
What we collected
We collected current, publicly accessible U.S.-market vertical-baler model specifications located on eight manufacturers' own websites or manufacturer PDFs when the source identified a cardboard, corrugated-cardboard, or OCC weight and usable bale dimensions. The release contains 51 model rows: 45 direct, unambiguous primary-source rows and six qualified primary-source rows.
What we excluded
- Discontinued models or models not locatable on a current manufacturer page or current manufacturer PDF as of July 29, 2026.
- Non-U.S.-market-specific pages where the weight clearly corresponded to a different national standard or measure.
- Horizontal machines, which are retained in a separate appendix because their geometry and claim conventions differ.
- Variable-length auto-tie density claims treated as fixed finished-bale weights.
How we classified the claims
The manufacturer's weight wording was preserved in published_weight_text and classified as range, ceiling, or stated. A ceiling was never given a fabricated minimum, a same-page conflict was never collapsed into one silent value, and a material ambiguity remained in the source note.
How the derived fields were calculated

When both weight and height are upper limits, dividing the maximum weight by maximum volume is labeled only as a max/max reference. It is not represented as measured density or as proof that both maxima occur in the same produced bale.
Quality-control checks
- Manufacturer/model combinations are unique.
- No published minimum exceeds its maximum.
- No ceiling row contains a fabricated minimum.
- Every calculated volume reproduces from the recorded dimensions.
- The page, CSV, JSON, data dictionary, and Dataset schema agree on 51 rows, eight manufacturers, 45 direct rows, six qualified rows, 19 ranges, 31 ceilings, and one stated value.
- Every headline calculation is reproducible from the release file or from an explicitly named official source.
What does a mill-size 60 × 30 × 48-inch cardboard bale weigh?
A fixed 60 × 30 × 48-inch bale has a nominal volume of 50 cubic feet. Among the four unqualified models in this dataset that publish ranges rather than only ceilings, the combined cardboard/OCC interval is 800–1,300 pounds; the full exact-geometry table contains 15 rows and extends to an upper-limit claim of 1,400 pounds.
“Mill-size” is trade shorthand, not a universal dimension fixed by ReMA Item 11 or another standards body. State the dimensions and claim type whenever precision matters.

What is the density of a cardboard bale?
A cardboard bale's weight-to-volume ratio depends on which bale, dimensions, material, and claim type are being compared. The strongest fixed-geometry range comparison in this dataset is 16.0–26.0 lb/ft³ for the four unqualified 60 × 30 × 48-inch range-spec rows; EPA's April 2016 memorandum separately lists baled OCC at 25.9–40.7 lb/ft³, but that factor is sourced to an equipment-company chart rather than a federal measurement study.

Why the EPA-published factor and model specifications differ
EPA's April 2016 memorandum did not collect a new federal sample of cardboard bales. Its table lists flattened OCC at 106 lb/yd³ from source 4 and baled OCC at 700–1,100 lb/yd³ from source 10; the memorandum's footnotes identify source 10 as WasteCare Corporation's “Some Typical Loose and Baled Weights of Various Materials.” The factor is useful when its provenance and unit are stated, but it should not be described as a measured national average.
Komar's fixed-height 60- through 84-inch line normalizes to about 450–702 lb/yd³ at the published upper endpoint or ceiling, and the legacy EPA-hosted chart gives 900 pounds for a 30 × 60 × 48-inch bale—486 lb/yd³. These references can coexist because they come from different equipment mixes, claim conventions, and source methods. This page publishes them side by side and does not average them.
How many cardboard bales make a ton?
Divide the ton definition by the measured bale weight. ReMA's paper-stock terms specify a U.S. short ton as 2,000 pounds and a metric tonne as 2,204.6 pounds, so a 1,000-pound bale equals 2.00 bales per short ton and 2.20 bales per metric tonne.

ReMA leaves minimum load weights and any light-load fees to the buyer and seller. Its terms require the parties to establish the minimum for each load and agree to any light-load fee before shipment, so no universal trailer minimum belongs in a bale-weight reference.
What was one cardboard bale worth at published 2026 OCC index prices?
At a stated OCC price per short ton, the index-value arithmetic for one bale is bale weight ÷ 2,000 × price per ton. Fastmarkets reported a U.S. national OCC average of $45 per short ton in January 2026 and $62.50 per ton in May 2026, so a 1,000-pound bale represented $22.50 and $31.25 at those two published averages.

The two verified 2026 national averages rose by $17.50 per short ton, or about 38.9%, from January to May. Grade, contamination, location, freight, contract terms, and the buyer's acceptance determine the actual transaction rather than bale weight alone.
Why do published cardboard bale weights disagree?
Published answers often combine unlike machine classes and claim types into one “average.” The table below records what seven current publisher pages actually say and what source disclosure is visible in each page, then compares those claims with the model-level primary-source register rather than treating repetition as verification.

Several recurring pound figures—67, 133, 444, 778, 889, 1,667, 1,750, and 2,222—closely match conversions of round metric values such as 30, 60, 200, 350, 400, 750, 800, and 1,000 kilograms. That numerical pattern supports treating them as a shared metric-origin classification unless a page supplies a separate measurement method; it does not establish that each publisher conducted an independent bale-weight study.
ReMA Item 11 defines material composition and contamination limits. It does not set a required OCC bale weight, so a number presented as an “Item 11 bale-weight standard” is not supported by the current specification.
Why does cardboard bale weight vary by machine and material?
Bale weight changes with nominal volume, machine configuration, finished height, material composition, moisture, fill point, and the manufacturer's claim convention. No single variable explains every row, which is why the register keeps dimensions, force, material basis, and claim type visible together.
Bale dimensions and finished height
Width and depth are usually set by the chamber, while finished height may be fixed, adjustable, or published only as “up to.” A 60 × 30 × 48-inch bale contains 50 nominal cubic feet; a 60 × 30 × 30-inch bale contains 31.25. A maximum-height row can finish shorter, so a max-weight/max-volume calculation remains a reference rather than a measurement.
Working force and platen pressure
Komar's same-size 60 × 30 × 48-inch line moves from 56,538 to 84,667 pounds of working force and from 30.9 to 47.0 psi of normal ram pressure across its published configurations. The weight claims also rise, but the relationship is not a universal conversion: near-identical force rows may use different claim wording, and force labels are not standardized across brands.
Komar's VB7242 and VB8448 publish nearly identical working-force figures—100,041 and 100,059 pounds—but normal ram pressures of 33.5 and 26.7 psi. Their different platen geometry accompanies different pressure and volume, which is why total force alone does not establish finished-bale density.
Bale size and normalized weight do not move in lockstep
The 50-cubic-foot Komar VB6030XD's published ceiling normalizes to 26.0 lb/ft³. The 112-cubic-foot VB8448's 2,200-pound range endpoint normalizes to about 19.6 lb/ft³. The larger model makes the heavier bale, but its published endpoint is lower per nominal cubic foot.
Material composition
“Cardboard” is broader than OCC. Corrugated containers, chipboard, paperboard, mixed paper, newsprint, shrink wrap, and plastics can produce different weights in the same chamber. A material-specific OCC claim is stronger evidence for this query than a multi-material maximum with no split.
Moisture
Water adds mass. ReMA's paper-stock terms require paper to be packed dry and state 12% as the maximum moisture limit unless buyer and seller agree to a different percentage and test method; excess moisture can support a weight adjustment or rejection. The primary sources reviewed do not establish one universal percentage by which wet cardboard increases bale weight, so this page does not publish one.
Fill point, actual scale weight, and tare
A manufacturer ceiling does not establish that every bale reaches that figure. ReMA's terms also distinguish gross and invoice weight: the weight of skids, Gaylord boxes, and similar materials is deducted from gross invoice weight, while cardboard sides and headers may be used only by agreement and may not be excessive.
Claim wording
A range, a ceiling, and a single stated figure answer different questions. The 31 ceilings in this release establish upper-limit claims; they cannot support a mean or typical output without field observations. The 19 ranges are more informative about an interval, but they remain manufacturer specifications rather than a random sample of produced bales.
What counts as cardboard, and what counts as OCC?
OCC—old corrugated containers—is a graded recovered-paper commodity, not a synonym for every product called cardboard. ReMA Item 11 consists of corrugated containers with test liner or kraft liner, limits prohibitive materials to 1%, and limits outthrows plus prohibitives to 5%; the current item has been effective since July 14, 2022 and carries HTS code 4707100000.
Indiana IDEMdescribes OCC as clean cardboard made from unbleached, unwaxed paper with a fluted inner liner and separately identifies waxed cardboard, chipboard, and foreign corrugated as possible contaminants. Paperboard products such as cereal boxes, beverage carriers, and shoeboxes are a separate category on the agency's page.
“Mill-size” is trade shorthand rather than a bale dimension written into ReMA Item 11. Current U.S. manufacturer pages repeatedly publish 60 × 30 × 48 inches, but other finished heights and footprints also appear. A citable weight statement therefore names the dimensions, machine or model, material basis, and claim type.
What does “cardboard” mean in Indiana and Marion County?
Bale weight does not acquire a different physical average at the state line, but local collection categories can be broader than a commodity grade. Indiana IDEM's OCC definition is narrower than Indianapolis and Marion County's public drop-off list, which accepts corrugated cardboard alongside paperboard, paper egg cartons, and paper or paperboard cans.
Those two definitions serve different purposes: the local list describes accepted collection material, while ReMA Item 11 and IDEM's OCC description help identify a commodity-grade corrugated stream. Material accepted in a municipal cardboard category is not automatically clean Item 11 OCC.
Indiana's 2024 Recycling Index Reportrecorded 840,265 tons of commodity-recyclable shipments from municipal solid waste, including 557,777 tons of paper and cardboard. The report calculated a 17.8% statewide recycling rate against Indiana's 50% municipal-waste recycling goal.
This research did not identify an official Indianapolis or Marion County average cardboard bale weight. The model-level manufacturer specifications above are more defensible than creating a local number unsupported by scale data.
Why does cardboard bale weight matter in 2026?
Weight determines ton conversions and index-value arithmetic, while claim type determines whether the published number is usable as a range or only as a ceiling. In 2026, Fastmarkets' verified national OCC averages rose from $45 per short ton in January to $62.50 in May, increasing the arithmetic value represented by a given measured bale without changing the bale's physical weight.
The national material stream is large. AF&PA reports that the United States recycled more than 33 million tons of cardboard in 2024—about 90,000 tons per day—at a 69%–74% rate, and explains that the current rate is a range because it compares material recycled with material available for recovery under an updated methodology. EPA's older municipal-solid-waste series separately reports 33.3 million tons of corrugated boxes generated in 2018; those two figures come from different methods and should not be treated as interchangeable.
For an individual load, ReMA's terms matter more than a generic market average: buyer and seller establish load minimums, price, payment terms, moisture agreement, and any light-load fee. The actual scale weight and grade control the transaction.
What safety context applies to cardboard balers?
Cardboard balers and finished bales present crushing, unexpected-startup, and material-handling hazards. OSHA states that unintended activation can have catastrophic results and that proper training and precautions are necessary; its cardboard-baling page records one worker crushed by 1,600 pounds of baled cardboard and another worker found crushed by a baling machine.
The 1,600-pound incident figure is a case fact, not evidence of a typical bale weight. This page is a specification and data reference, not an operating, servicing, jam-clearing, lockout, or bale-handling procedure; those tasks belong under the machine manufacturer's procedures, applicable workplace rules, and trained and authorized personnel.

What are the limitations of this dataset?
The limitations define what can be quoted from the register without overstating the evidence. The page is strongest as a current manufacturer-specification dataset and transparent calculation system; it is not a field-measurement study.
- The 51 vertical rows are manufacturer specifications, estimates, ranges, ceilings, or single stated values—not measurements made for this page.
- Thirty-one rows are ceilings. A ceiling cannot establish an average, typical result, or guaranteed output.
- Six rows are marked ● because the current primary source contains a same-page conflict, adjustable-dimension issue, archive/model-page mismatch, or material-assignment ambiguity.
- Bramidan's B7242 SD page says 1,400+ pounds in its summary and 1,550–1,850 pounds in its detailed technical specifications; the dataset uses the detailed specification and preserves both statements in the source note.
- Harmony's M30STD page gives a 25-inch maximum height in its summary and up to 24 inches in the detailed specifications; the dataset uses the detailed figure.
- Harmony's M60MD summary says no more than 800 pounds while its detailed specifications state an estimated 700–800 pounds; the dataset uses the detailed range.
- Harmony's S60XD model page says up to 1,000 pounds while the manufacturer archive lists 900–1,000 pounds; the model-page ceiling is used and the archive conflict is disclosed.
- MAX-PAK's MP7242 page describes the model as primarily for OCC and shredded old newspaper, then gives one maximum weight without a material-specific split; its bale height is adjustable.

- Normalized lb/ft³ on ceiling rows divides a maximum weight by a nominal volume and is marked with †; it is not an average or measured density.
- Variable-height rows divide a maximum weight by a maximum volume; the two maxima are not asserted to occur simultaneously in a produced bale.
- Ton and monetary arithmetic uses manufacturer-stated weights as inputs; a ceiling input means the result is also a ceiling.
- This dataset covers U.S.-market vertical baler specifications. Non-U.S. specifications may differ.

How much does a 60-inch cardboard bale weigh?
